When deploying devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points (APs), and PoE phones, choosing the right power delivery method is a critical decision.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology enables both data transmission and power delivery over a single Ethernet cable, simplifying cabling and improving deployment flexibility.

However, did you know that there are two completely different types of PoE power delivery methods in the market?

Standard PoE and Non-standard PoE.

Although both appear to provide power, mixing them improperly can lead to serious consequences, including:

  • Device damage
  • Network interruptions
  • Even potential fire hazards

1.Standard PoE: Safe and Intelligent Power Delivery Through Detection and Classification

Core principle: Detect first, then deliver power.

Standard PoE follows the international specifications defined by the IEEE.

Before supplying power, the PSE performs detection and classification with the PD to verify PoE compatibility and determine the appropriate power level.

Only after confirming that:

  • The connected device supports PoE
  • The power requirements and voltage levels are compatible

will the PSE start delivering power.

Main IEEE Standards:

2.Non-standard PoE: Direct Power Delivery Without Detection

Mode A: Data and power share the same twisted pairs (1/2/3/6)

Mode B: Power is delivered through the spare pairs (4/5/7/8)

Advantages:

Safe: Devices that do not support PoE will not receive power, preventing potential damage.

Compatible: Supports interoperability between devices from different vendors.

Intelligent: Enables remote rebooting and power consumption monitoring.

Non-standard PoE, also known as Passive PoE, does not include any PoE detection or classification mechanism.

It applies a fixed DC voltage directly over the Ethernet cable without verifying whether the connected device supports PoE.

  • 12V
  • 24V
  • 48V

Regardless of whether the connected device supports PoE or not.

Common Forms:

PoE Injector

A PoE injector connects a standard network switch on one side and an external power source on the other side, injecting power into the Ethernet cable in between.

Non-standard PoE Switch

These are typically low-cost switches where all ports provide power by default without any detection or protection mechanism.

Power Delivery Method:

  • Usually delivers DC power through spare pairs (4/5/7/8)
  • Voltage levels are not standardized (12V/24V/48V)
  • High risk of incompatibility due to voltage mismatch

Critical Drawbacks:

Device damage: Connecting non-PoE devices, ordinary computers, or incompatible APs may damage the network interface card, or in severe cases, burn out the motherboard.

No protection mechanism: No automatic power shutdown protection is available in cases of overvoltage, overcurrent, or short circuits.

Poor compatibility: Different manufacturers may use different voltage standards, creating significant risks when devices are mixed.

Suitable Applications:

Only recommended for a limited number of dedicated scenarios, such as certain industrial devices.

It is not recommended for enterprise network deployments.

Choose Standard PoE devices whenever possible:

Ensure that switches, APs, and cameras support IEEE PoE standards such as:

  • IEEE 802.3af

Look for IEEE certification markings:

Check the product specifications and confirm whether IEEE 802.3af/at/bt support is clearly stated.

Avoid using Non-standard PoE injectors:

If they must be used, make sure:

  • Voltage matches exactly
  • Polarity is correct
  • Devices are isolated from other network equipment

Implement proper labeling:

Apply “High Risk” labels to non-standard PoE equipment to prevent accidental connections.

❌ Never Do the Following:

  • Connect non-standard PoE switches to core networks
  • Use non-standard PoE to power laptops or desktop computers
  • Mix PoE devices with different voltage requirements (For example, connecting a 12V AP to a 24V power source)
